As a younger woman, Halle Berry cherished to look at profitable Black actors play the lead roles in motion pictures and TV reveals. Because the Catwoman star was raised by a white mother, she yearned to search out individuals who she might really relate to.
“It was very, essential,” Berry defined within the PBS documentary American Masters: How It Feels to Be Free. “I actually struggled to search out photos of Black girls or girls that I might determine with.”
It wasn’t till the actor noticed Diahann Carroll in Julia that she realized the kind of girl she wished to be.
“Seeing Diahann Carroll being the star of a present and taking part in a mom who was a nurse, who was educated, who was lovely, simply rearranged me,” Berry mentioned. “It made me notice I had worth and I might flip each week to a girl that appeared like who I’d aspire to be once I grew up.”
On the time, Carroll was the right position mannequin Berry wanted in her life.
“I used to be a Black little one being raised by a white girl, so I did not have these photos in my family,” she mentioned. “Discovering them on tv and thru motion pictures grew to become very, very essential to me.”
Carroll’s performing in Julia made Berry need to pursue a profession within the leisure business. And due to that, Berry is now one of the profitable actors in the present day.
By her showing in motion pictures, she tells different Black children that they will do it too.
