Production and research at one site

GSK plans to invest more than $800 million in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The proposed biopharmaceutical hub would bring commercial production, research and development, and advanced digital capabilities together at one site.

  • Commercial-scale biologics manufacturing for clinical and commercial supply.
  • A co-located research and development pilot plant.
  • A centralised quality-control laboratory and manufacturing science and technology hub.

Existing buildings would be demolished to make room for new and enhanced facilities.

Construction is planned for 2027. The expansion is expected to create more than 300 jobs over five years and retain approximately 4,500 existing full-time positions across Pennsylvania. GSK would be eligible for the state’s Qualified Manufacturing Innovation and Reinvestment Deduction and Manufacturing Tax Credit programmes.

Regis Simard, GSK’s global supply chain president, expected the additional manufacturing and digital capabilities to accelerate development and supply of future medicines.

A previously announced US investment programme

GSK announced a $30 billion, five-year programme for US research and development and supply-chain infrastructure on September 17, 2025. The programme covered capital investment alongside drug discovery, development and clinical-trial activity. Its manufacturing and technology component included a newly announced $1.2 billion allocation.

That allocation covered a new Upper Merion biologics flex factory, additional drug-substance manufacturing, and enhanced device and auto-injector capabilities and assembly. It also included AI and advanced digital technology across five existing manufacturing sites in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland and Montana.

GSK planned a 2026 construction start for the flex factory in its September 2025 investment announcement. Construction at Upper Merion was planned to begin in 2027 in Pennsylvania’s October 2026 announcement. The earlier $1.2 billion allocation covered several manufacturing and technology investments.

Earlier investment in Marietta

GSK began construction of its $800 million Marietta, Pennsylvania, facility in October 2024, as confirmed in September 2025. That project was intended to double the site’s size and capacity. The company linked these manufacturing investments to hundreds of future skilled jobs, alongside construction employment.
